Staying Safe with a Simple Utensil Kit

Minutes to Read: 2 minutes

The Simple Utensil Kit is one of my favourite Plantish products.

With the world slowly returning back to "normal" and restaurants and public places now open, everyone is wanting to go out more frequently to gather with close family and friends.

Especially now with the inevitable COVID-19 virus that has been prominent for the past 2 years, bringing our own utensils is the best thing to do to avoid potential oral contact of the virus.

      Protecting Yourself Against COVID-19

Here in Ontario, Canadians are in stage 2 of the re-opening plan. That means the province is continuing to further expand outdoor activities and resuming limited indoor services with small numbers of people with face coverings being worn. Due to restaurants closure in 2020, Canadians have a strong urge to dine in now that outdoor dining with 6 people per table are permitted.

What can you do to protect yourself?

Continuing to fight COVID-19, restaurants switched to QR code scanning menus, electronic COVID-19 screening and plastic disposable utensils. Although it's easy and practical, it is creating a lot of waste. By bringing your own cutlery to restaurants, you can protect yourself against COVID-19 when you go out.

      Are Plastic Utensils Really Safe?

Health: EU's single-use-plastics (SUPs) ban has been in effect since July 3, 2021

Studies have found that certain chemicals in plastic can leach out of the plastic and into the food and beverages that we eat and drink. The EU has identified over 400 chemicals that are likely to be used in plastics, many of them raising potential health concerns.

The problem is that these chemicals, including phthalates, brominated flames retardants and Bisphenol A (or BPA), have been linked to various diseases, from organ damages to birth defects.

Environment: single-use utensils and cups are creating a lot of waste

Single use plastic utensils can take up to 1,000 years to decompose and break down. Most plastic utensils are made from polystyrene, which releases toxic chemicals when heated. It's estimated that more than 17 billion pounds of plastic leaks into the marine environment every year from land-based resources. That's like a garbage truck full of plastic every minute.
